Diarrhoe claims child in Kapilvastu
Kapilvastu,
Aug 20: A child of Maharajgunj Municipality in Kapilvastu died of diarrhoea
today.
The
deceased has been identified as eight-year-old Tarekh Raidas, son of Chaitaram
Raidas of Maharajgunj Municipality-7, according to public health officer at the
District health Office, Bishnu Jayaswal. More than 50 people have been affected
from the diarrhoea that has spread in the municipality from Thursday.
Consumption
of contaminated water and lack of hygiene are said to be the reasons behind the
diarrhoea epidemic.
A
team of health workers has been sent to village to carry out treatment of those
affected people who are in normal condition while the serious ones have been
undergoing treatment at Bahadurgunj Hospital.
The
District Health Office has urged all to remain alert as there was high risk of
the diarrhoea spreading in the flood-affected areas. RSS

Urlabari, Aug 20: A wild elephant
that strayed into human settlement from the nearby jungle destroyed two houses
in Urlabari, causing a loss of Rs. 1.2 million.
The houses of Balbir Thapa and Santa
Dhimal in Jharsadi, Urlabari-1 were brought down by the elephant, according to
Area Police Office, Urlabar, police inspector Chandra Bahadur Thapa. The
incident took place at mid-night when the wild animal came from the nearby
Miklunk jungle. RSS

10- More than 450 viral fever patients treated in Rukum
Rukum,
Aug 20: The District Public Health Office (DPHO), Rukum has provided necessary
healthcare services to more than 450 locals in various places across the
district, who were infected with viral fever.
The infection,
earlier unidentified, had been plaguing people here in succession, stoking fear
among them of the outbreak of an unidentified epidemic.

A team of
doctors from Kathmandu reached at Khadi in Aathbiskot Municiplaity-3 in the
district on last Friday and identified it to be viral fever caused due to
consumption of contaminated water and food, according to DPHO, Rukum's official
Nandalal Mahato.
More than 250
infected people in Khadi village alone were treated while the medical team rendered
healthcare services to other 200 patients thronging other health institutions
seeking medical intervention, shared Mahato. He added that the patients with
symptoms as headache, abdominal ache, and vomiting and limb pain among others
continue to visit their nearest health institutions. RSS

Minister directs to provide 24 hours service to flood-survivors
Gaushala, Aug
20: Minister for Health, Girirajmani
Pokharel, has today directed the health workers of Mahottari district to provide
24 hours service for flood-survivors.
Health Minister
Pokharel issued such directive during a visit to the District Public Health
Office at Jaleshwor. Some 40,000 families have been affected by floods in
Mahottari.
He also
directed the health workers to reach to the flood-hit areas in the district
along with medicines, and avoiding spreading of the disease. After inspecting
the medicines stored at the storage of the Office, and the emergency section of
the District Hospital, Health Minister Pokharel expressed commitment to
increase capacity of the hospital and to send doctors and health workers as per
the quota of the hospital.
There are
presently only three doctors in the 25-bed hospital. RSS

12- More than 60,000 new voters enrolled in Kailali
Dhangadi,
Aug 20: Over
60,000 new voters have registered themselves in the biometric voter list of the
Election Commission of Nepal in Kailali district following the recently held
local level elections.
A total of 60,012 new voters enrolled at
the District Election Office (DEO), Kailali in the province no 7. Of them,
33,180 were women while 26,832 were male, according to the Chief of the
Regional Election Office, Dhangadi Mohan Prasad Aryal.
The voters name list update campaign was
launched by the ECN across the country in view of the federal and provincial
elections due by January, 2018. The deadline for registration of new voters to
the name list was 19 August.
Now
with the old and new added voters, Kalali district records a total of 463,292
voters, according to the DEO, Kailali. The rapid migration to the district is
attributed for registration of such a large number of new voters in the

13- Joshi to be decorated with ‘Literary century person’
title
Kathmandu, Aug 20: The
Government is to honour language and culture expert Satya Mohan Joshi with the
‘Literary Century Person’ title. The 98-year-old is being decorated with the
title amidst a function being held in the capital on Tuesday.
The decision to this end was
made by the Council of Ministers in May earlier this year. At the same
function, various prizes and awards including the national and regional talent
prize, Pushpa Lal national prize, Bhagat Sarbajit human dignity national prize
and the Mahakabi Devkota prize will be presented to various personalities,
according to the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation. RSS

14- Rain affects Upper Tamakoshi works, cost expected to
rise
Charikot,
Aug 20: Monsoon rain coupled with other factors have affected the construction
works of Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower Project.
Repercussion
of rainfall, ongoing upgradation of Lamo Shaghu-Jiri road section and the rise
and fall of US Dollars among others have been reasoned to have affected the
construction process, while also increasing the cost of the proposed 465-mega
hydel by seven billion.
The
estimated construction cost of this hydel of national pride- Rs 35.20 billion-
is expected to reach Rs 41.64 billion, according to Spokesperson of the Upper
Tamakoshi Project, Dr Ganesh Neupane.
More
than Rs 34 billion has already been spent on the hydel said Spokesperon Dr
Neupane, adding that the electricity generation from the hydel expected to
commence by July, 2018 would be further delayed. Only 90.5 per cent of the
project works have completed so far, shared Dr Neupane. RSS

15- PM calls for more contribution from media sector
Kathmandu, Aug
20: Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that the media sector has played
a significant role for the consolidation of democratic republic in the country.
Inaugurating
the 25th general convention of the Federation of Nepali Journalists
here today, he said the journalism sector has had a very important contribution
to the changes that have taken place in various points of time in the country,
and called for more contribution from the sector in the nation building process
henceforth.

On the
occasion, the Prime Minister said, “There are many media in Nepal, they are
financially weak and I understand well the difficulties in journalism”. Stating
that the constitution has guaranteed the right to expression and full press
freedom, he said that all the elections should be held as per schedule for
implementing the new constitution.
Also speaking
at the programme, Minister for Information and Communications Mohan Bahadur
Basnet expressed the commitment to enforce media policy and the minimum wage of
working journalists. He however stressed on the need to make the journalism
sector respected as well as independent.
UML leader
Yogesh Bhattarai, NC leader Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat and CPN (MC) leader Pampha
Bhusal also extended best wishes for the success of the general convention. The
general convention will elect a 45-member new working committee for a term of
three years. A total of 1,515 journalists are participating in the general
convention. Around 10,000 journalists are associated with the FNJ, an umbrella
organization of journalists from across the country.
At the inaugural function,
Prime Minister Deuba presented the 'Krishna Prasad Bhatatrai National
Journalism Award, established by FNJ, to journalist Bijay Kumar Pandey. The
award carries a purse of Rs 100,000.
Similarly,
'Govinda Biyogi National Journalism Award' and 'Krishna Sen 'Ichchuk' National
Journalism Award were presented to senior journalist Bhairab Risal and Komal
Baral respectively. Each carries a purse of RS 50,000.
Likewise,
journalist Seema Singh Sharma was awarded with the 'Uma Singh National
Journalism Award' while 'Gauri Kathayat Memorial Journalism Award' was
presented to Pushkar Thapa (postmothously). Each award carries a purse of Rs
25,000.
The 'Freedom
Fighter Award' was presented to 12 persons including Harsha Subba (Sunsari),
Ashok Rauniyar (Dhanusha), Basanta Pokharel (Rupandehi) and Ram Bahadur KC

programme postponed to support flood survivors
Bhaktapur, Aug
20: The Nepali Congress Women’s Chapter, Bhaktapur has handed over the funds
collected to celebrate the Teej festival to the flood survivors.
The chapter
decided to postpone the celebration programme and hand over the fund worth Rs.
61,151 to the people affected by floods and landslides in the country.
Coordinator of the Chapter Urmila Won today handed over the amount to the NC
Bhaktapur chair Durlav Thapa to be deposited into the Prime Minister’s Disaster
Relief Fund.
All the ward
units of the Chapter had raised funds for the event. RSS

17- Software in Nepali for visually impaired launched

Nepal)
Kathmandu, Aug
20: Now the visually challenged people in the country could read and hear in
Nepali language, thanks to the software developed by two IT experts at the
Kathmandu University (KU) for the Nepal Netra Joyti Sangh.
Prof Dr Bal
Krishna Bal and Nirajan Panta developed the software named Optical Character
Recognition (OCR) for the first time in Nepali language after two years of
research.
The technology
offers the blind and visually impaired people to scan printed texted and then
speak it back in synthetic speech or save it to a computer in aid of the speech
synthesis application named Text to Speech (TTS).
The Australian
government had provided financial assistance worth Rs 2.4 million for the
development of the software that could prove a boon for the 95,000 blind
population recorded in the country in the last census, said Sangh's President
Nar Bahadur Limbu.
Visually
impaired people, despite their visual disabilities, are gradually climbing up
the social ladder by taking up offices in government bodies as the state organs
ensures reservations in vacancies for the people with disabilities.
There are
three such officer-level and 11 non-gazetted second class officers serving in
the various government bodies.
Limbu is of
confidence that the software could benefit as many as blind and visually
impaired ones alike in the country.
According
to Limbu, the software works in the alternative of an eye to those visually
challenged ones as they could read Nepali letters.
The
Sangh is also going to organize training for 100 blind people for them to be
able to operate the software as it aims to distribute the same software to them
in the first phase. Also, every blind person registered in the Sangh will
receive a laptop along with the same software.
The
plan is estimated to be materialized at the cost Rs 20 million. The Sangh has
meanwhile urged the concerned bodies and international donors for financial
assistance towards this end. RSS

18- YAN to
provide relief and financial aid to flood survivors
Kathmandu, Aug 20: A
45-member team led by chairman of Youth Association Nepal, close to the CPN
(UML), Rajeev Pahari, on Sunday left for flood and landslide hit areas of
eastern region to provide relief and financial assistance to flood and
landslide survivors.

The team would
provide financial aid of Rs 25,000 to the family of a child in Saptari district
and would provide relief materials to flood survivors of Sunsari, Jhapa and
Morang districts coordinating with local administration.
The Association
has also directed its units in the flood and landslide hit districts to collect
relief materials and distribute it to landslide and flood survivors.
According to
the data of the Home Ministry, some 135 people lost their lives, 30 went
missing and 41 sustained injuries from the natural disaster that hit different
places of the country this monsoon. RSS

19- RJP-Nepal
will participate in election: CEC Yadav
Dhanusha, Aug
20: Chief Election Commissioner Dr Ayodhi Prasad Yadav has said that the
Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal would participate in the third round of local-level
election after choosing one of the election symbols out of six election symbols
of erstwhile Madhes-based parties.
At a news
conference in Janakpur today, CEC Yadav said the RJP-Nepal is going to contest
the local-level election being held in Province no. 2 on September 18 as per
the political agreement.
He said that
discussion was underway with the government to hold federal and provincial
election in 31 mountainous and hilly districts on November 20.
On the
occasion, CEC Yadav said, "In the third phase of local elections a
monitoring committee will investigate and take action against the appointment
of employees for the purpose of the election carried out without following the
due process and against the use of children in the election process." RSS
